Common Contaminants in Your Water

Coliform Bacteria

A group of bacteria that indicates the potential that disease-causing bacteria are present in the water.

Total Dissolved Solids – This refers to the total number of solids dissolved in the water. High TDS may indicate high levels of dissolved salts or other water quality problems.

pH Levels

pH refers to how acidic or basic the water is. A pH level far from neutral could indicate high levels of heavy metals, high salt contents, or other water quality problems.

Iron

High levels of iron can cause a metallic taste and orange-brown stains, making the water unusable.

Hardness

This refers to the calcium carbonate level in the water. Although it does not pose a health threat, hardness can ruin water heater elements, make laundry challenging to wash and make it difficult to lather soap among other issues.

Water Softener FAQs

Got a question? We’re here to help.

  • Why Is My Water Cloudy?

There could be four possible reasons that your water is cloudy, including:

    • Hard Water
    • Air Bubbles
    • Methane Gas
    • Total Suspended Solids (TSS)

Our expert team can evaluate your cloudy water issue to determine the cause and make recommendations on how to resolve the issue.

  • What Causes Water Stains?

Stains that are red, pink, or rust-colored, located around pipes could be a result of iron bacteria. When water passes through the water system and into the pipes, it can carry iron bacteria which can cause your water to taste or smell strange, stain fixtures, and will eventually clog your pumps and pipes.

While this type of bacteria does not pose a health risk, you should report this issue to your local water company and contact Aqua Solutions immediately so we can install a home filtration system to control the bacteria.

  • Do I Have Hard Water?

Hard water is defined as water that is high in dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium. Hard water does not pose a risk to your health, but the mineral buildup can damage appliances and pipes and reduce the effectiveness of soaps and detergents. The best way to determine if you have hard water is to have your water tested by a professional at Aqua Solutions.

  • Where Does My Water Come from?

For most homes, you either get your water from a municipality system or form a private water system that comes from a groundwater well. If you get your water from a municipality, they remove the leaves and silt from the water and disinfect it. If you get your water from a well, it is your responsibility to test and filter your water as needed. It is critical to know where your water comes from so you can ensure it is safe and of good quality.

  • How Do I Know What is in My Water?

For those using municipal water, you can contact your local water supplier and request a drinking water quality report. If you get your water from a private well, you will need to have your well tested by professionals like Aqua Solutions.

  • If I Have a Water Softener, Do I Need a Water Filtration System?

Water softeners and water filtration systems each serve a different purpose. A water softener works to replace the magnesium and calcium with sodium to make the water soft. A water filtration system works to remove contaminants from the water such as cysts, chemicals, bacteria, lead, and sodium for cleaner, safer, great-tasting water for cooking and drinking.
